Here at teamchasing.co.uk we aim to provide information for all your team chasing needs. Team chasing is one of the most exciting horse sports around at the moment, where teams of three or four horses and riders compete over natural cross-country courses all over the country. Often run by hunts, team chases are great rider and spectator events with courses for all abilities and friendly atmospheres.

Fernie National Championship - Statistics

Firstly congratulations to Relentless on your success in yesterday’s 2012 Championship. I have already had the privilege of watching Total Recall Video’s replay of a number of rounds, and Relentless are nearly foot perfect. I for one know that whilst luck plays it’s part in such things, it takes far more than just luck to produce a round of that quality - not to mention countless hours of preparation and planning, both in human and equine terms. The team were a great credit to the sport yesterday, and fabulous to watch alongside so many other good rounds in the Championship particularly from the Art Hotel Chasers and the Hair Raisers. Thank you to you all.

In our brief post-event committee review last night, we were debating whether your round was the fastest ever completion of the Championship track at Tur Langton. I have researched the statistics and records, and am delighted to confirm that you have indeed recorded the fastest ever round of the Championship course at Tur Langton since we moved the course there in 2000, and ran the first Championship in 2002. Your time yesterday of 4min 09.77secs eclipsed the time set by the Forge Flyers (4m 11.04secs) in 2003 by a mere 1.27 seconds.

But we can go into a little more detail than that as we also measure each year’s course as accurately as possible on some digital mapping software. There have been a handful of changes since 2003 in direction and route of course as you will be aware, not to mention a full reconstruction of every fence that remains in the same position as it was. The 2003 Championship track measured 2,852 metres (1.77 miles) as against the 2012 track which measured 2,702 metres (1.68 miles), albeit that in both cases we may not be absolutely precise as to the respective positioning of fences in hedgelines or the middle of fields etc. In each case there were 30 fences, and the measuring line assumes some very tight and fast angles – some may say impossible lines and angles! In reality I suspect that most teams will have run over a longer distance in both years – yourselves included …..?

There are a couple of other interesting points in these statistics ……

  • The Art Hotel’s round in 2012 was faster than their winning round of 2011. Let us not forget that the going in 2011 was firmer than in 2012, and hence we can safely say that their performance this year was equally as good as last year if not better!
  • 2009 was the other memorable year, when the Art Hotel set (what at the time was) the second fastest recorded time around the course, behind the Forge Flyers 2003 time, but notably with 2nd and 3rd (Hair Raisers and Fight the Ban respectively) within 10 seconds of the winners. Consequently the 3 best rounds in that year are all in the top 7 fastest rounds ever recorded on the course.
  • The top five fastest times overall have all been recorded by different teams, and no team has more than 2 rounds in those top ten places.

I am attaching a sheet summarising the statistics that we have gleaned, which to my mind make very interesting reading from a historical perspective if nothing else. What of course they do not include is the state of the going in each year, but we do know that the firmest going was for 2011 (as we had to agrivate the entire course in that year), with 2012 and 2004 being other years when we have had to use the agrivator on substantial (but not every) parts of the course.
