Hi Guys,

I have a lovely Gelding called Maverick, he missed the Team chase at York on Sunday after developing a swollen Hock, it has always been a bit boggy, but now is the size of a boiled egg. The vet says it is a Thoroughpin, he is not lame at all but has been put on bute for a couple of days for the swelling.
I just wondered if anyone else has a horse suffering from this condition, as I am worried competing will make it worse in the long run?

Any advice from the daring pro's would be much appreciated!

not so much daring pro as seasoned hunting person.... but here's my tuppence worth.

make sure to keep a bottle of NoBute or similar in the cupboard for days when its more swollen or he's stiff on it, use plenty of cold hosing on these days and after fast work, and make sure to put icetight/staysound or similar over the hocks after fast work (especially on hard ground) as soon as you've washed him off and his legs are dry.

sometimes its linked to barley or alfalfa intolerances, but usually you'd see other signs first - like filled legs, protein bumps under the skin etc. but it might be worth looking into.

where possible avoid the sort of 'showjumping' turn at high speed that twists the hocks and fetlocks as it may aggravate it.

your farrier may have some suggestions too if he is a generally useful sort.

generally, once they have formed and settled they no longer cause any problems if you can aviod aggravating them.

Otherwise the vet always knows best.

let us know how you get on with it.

Thanks very much, that all made a lot of sense. Vet coming tomorrow as it has got bigger still over the weekend - turned waterworks on with husband, and it worked so have free rein to do some investigating!! (Not sure if the hocks are exempt from my insurance!) :)

hi my horse has two throughpins one on either side they are caused by stain and sometimes can go down stright away my horse is on rest for a few months just need to let him rest and do a little as poss if you want to work him but only for small amounts of time if you search on the web for thoroughpins you will find out more thats what in doing you vet will try to get you to have a scan but there not alway that much help some times its better to have it drained depending how big yours is not that big but could get a little bigger and they can go from being on one side of the leg to the inside of the leg its not to much to worry about
